How to find Low competition keywords:
Do you want to increase organic traffic?
For that, you have to find low competitive keywords.
But Keyword research could be a pain for you, especially if you are a newbie.
But the truth is:
Keyword research is important as creating quality content.
I can say that because:
At early days of blogging, I wrote a blog post 13 steps to make blog visible on search engines which is one of the detailed and helpful posts I have ever written.
It neither became visible on search engines nor it got any organic traffic.
I worked on the wrong keyword. I wrote the blog post on the keyword which has Zero monthly searches.
It was getting social traffic but I can’t rely on social traffic all the time. Because social traffic is short term traffic.
And if you want to survive as a blogger then you have to focus on organic traffic.
To get the organic traffic your keywords should be ranked on search engines.
But the problem is:
Most of the high volume keywords are very competitive. And High authority sites are already ranked for those keywords.
So the solution is:
Low competition keywords and Long tail keywords.
So in this post, I will show you how to find low competition keywords that would be easy to rank. I am going to steal competitor’s keywords.
I am also going to use Alexa rank checker to find low competition keywords.

1. Select your competitors:
Most of the newbie bloggers make a mistake of selecting wrong competitors.
If you a newbie and just started a blog whose niche is WordPress and Blogging Tips then your competitors must be Shoutmeloud and Wpbeginner.
At this time they are not your competitors. Because their blog have high authority and you are just starting out.
They may be your competitors but in long term.
If you are trying to outrank these authority sites then it will be very difficult for you to rank on search engines.
So you have to find those competitors which would be easy to outrank.
Now a question is how to find that kind of competitors?
For finding that kind of competitors I use Mozbar.
Mozbar is a chrome extension which shows the Domain Authority and Page Authority of the site.
Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA) are the metrics developed by Moz.
For that, you have to install Mozbar Extension on your Chrome browser.
Steps to install Moz bar extension:
- Click on Customize and control icon.
- Go to more tools.
- Click on extensions.
- Now at bottom of the page, you will find get more extension. click on it.
- Search for Moz bar.
- Click on install.
After installing the extension, you have to just signup for a free account on Moz. Then you have to log in to your Moz account.
Whenever you surf the internet and visits some site it will show you the DA, PA, and number of backlinks pointing to that URL.
Factors on the basis of which you can select your competitors:
To create competitor’s list I check out the following points and create a notepad file:
- Blogging niche:
- DA < 10
- DA < My blog’s DA
- Sometimes I go with Higher DA ( Depends on content and search volume )
Where to find competitors:
- Search Engines:
Search engines are the best place to find your competitors. Just you have to put the different queries in the search box related to your niche and it will show you tons of result.
You should check first 2-3 pages of the search result and pick out those domains which have low Domain Authority.
- Social Media Sites
Normally most of the bloggers use Social media sites for promoting their content and build relationships with their readers. But Using social media sites you can get the Blog Post ideas and you can also find the low competition keywords.
On Facebook and Pinterest groups you can find out many blogs similar to your niche. You can also know what type of content people are liking.
2. Find competitor’s keywords:
After creating your competitor’s list next step is to find their organic keywords.
For this, you can use following tools:
SEMrush is a SEM (Search engine marketing ) and SEO (Search engine optimization tool).
SEMrush is also used to analyze your competitor.
So you have to just enter the URL of your competitor and it will do all work for you.
It will show you the Keywords for which your competitor are ranking along with search volumes.
You can use SEmrush for free but with restrictions. So if you want to get an idea of your competitor’s keywords for you can easily do with it.
For the complete analysis of your competitors, you have to signup for their paid account.
Ahrefs is a great tool for keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink checking, rank tracking and many more features.
You can also scrap out your competitor’s keyword by using this tool.
Just you have to enter the competitors URL and it does the complete analysis and shows you information regarding backlink profile, organic search etc.
Alexa is a part of Amazon network. Most of the peoples use Alexa just for check out their blogs rankings.
And I was doing the same thing.
But one day I realize that:
Along with the rankings, Alexa also shows the “Top Keywords from Search Engines” section along with the percentage of visits.
So you can get the keyword ideas from that section and work on them.

Serpstat is an another growth hacking tool which you can use to mine the low competition keyword.

3. Analysis of keywords:
After following all the steps, you will get a decent list of keywords. So next step is to select the keywords which have high search volumes and for which your competitors are ranking on top positions.
In this step you have to analyze:
- Search volumes & Keyword difficulty (For more surety)
- Content quality
For this purpose you can use following tools:
For keyword analysis I like Kwfinder. You can also with Keyword Planner and other tools. Here I am analyzing Adversal keyword.
Kwfinder is a keyword research and analysis tool. It suggests various Long tail keywords with low SEO competition.
Once it gets confirmed that keyword has low competition.
You have to analyze the content and backlinks of top 10 search results. If you can write killer content on that topic then start working on it.
If you are struggling to get organic traffic then you should try out this method. I have started using this method last month and I can saw the increase in my organic traffic.
And the best part is:
I have just written 2 blog post last month. I just optimized the old blog post for low competition keywords.
Some blog posts which were previously ranking on 6 -7 page is now ranking on 2 page of Google and some are ranking on the first page.
